Woody Allen's Unusual Shots

Throughout Annie Hall, we see a variety of different shots that are not used often in other films. Some examples include, speaking directly to the camera (breaking the fourth wall) and a long, stationary shot of a sidewalk, with the audio of Woody Allen having a conversation. During the stationary shot, we do not even see Woody Allen until he turns the corner, and walks past the camera. The length of time the shot takes up, and the combination of the visuals and audio make this scene unique.

Other interesting scene was while Woody Allen and Annie were in bed, a "second version" of Annie appears and leaves the bed, as if it is her subconscious, and her mind is somewhere else (and not in bed with Woody Allen.

Some other honorable mentions include: a flashback of Woody Allen's to his school days, where young kids speak to the camera, explaining where they are currently, a conversation between Annie and Woody Allen where their thoughts are shown in subtitles, and a scene were Woody Allen and Annie appear in one of Annie's flashbacks.

  1. Great discussion of Allen's style. Your stills support your discussion as well. Remember to end with a question.
