Annie Hall

Rulebreaker Annie Hall
I have never seen a movie break as many rules as many times as Annie Hall. Alvy would talk to the audience many times which is very unusual for a character in the plot. Multiple characters would be in the same room as people from many years ago, including themselves. Characters from different times and places would interact. Alvy would talk to random people who would openly talk about their lives even in ways that they would never truly say out loud, like saying that they are shallow, and even talking to a cartoon. This film is clearly a comedy, but even so, how did they get away with all of these techniques and not look like a mess of a film? All of these things were clever and well put together instead of being confusing like it very well could have been. That takes some incredible writing and directing.

  1. Great point about how Allen's use of many techniques somehow works together and does not end up a big mess. Great stills to show 2 ways he experiments. It's the techniques, in my opinion, that make the film an important comedy.
